Happy Canada Day!

The Whitehorn Community Association wishes everyone a very happy Canada Day and safe long weekend.

The City has planned a ton of fun and free events. For a complete list of events and accompanying road closures, please check the City of Calgary’s Canada Day Events page.

They even have a handy interactive map for the downtown festivities, how awesome is that?!!

A couple to know about here in the NE:

July 1st, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

7555 Falconridge Boulevard N.E.
Enjoy a multicultural celebration for all Canadians, including Syrian refugees, at the Genesis Centre, put on by uTurn Project Inc. There will be artistic and creative performances and lots of family-friendly activities. You can mingle with provincial and federal elected officials as well.

July 1st, 11 am – 1:30 pm
223 Castleridge Blvd NE, Calgary, AB

Enjoy a free BBQ, mingle with friends and fellow community members, and participate in numerous fun activities at the annual Canada Day celebrations hosted by Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at at Prairie Winds Park. Highlights of the event include:

▪ Flag hoisting and national anthem presented by a group of children
▪ Greetings by Federal, Provincial, Civic and community leaders
▪ Free BBQ
▪ Displays, educational/fun activities by various City departments including Police, EMS & Fire Services as well as the Calgary Public Library
▪ Recreational activities and games for kids
▪ Stalls by various communities and non-profit organizations
▪ Guided tours of Baitun Nur, one of the largest mosques in Canada

How to get around this weekend

Calgarians are encouraged to walk, bike and take transit to the downtown area on Canada Day. To further facilitate this, bike racks have been added in various locations.

Important information about  transit:
Whitehorn and Rundle CTrain stations will be closed for maintenance from June 30 – July 2.

Shuttle buses will be in place, running between McKnight-Westwinds and Marlborough stations. More information.
On July 1 and 2 Calgary Transit will be providing a Sunday level of service. Some bus routes will be on detour when the Centre Street bridge is closed for fireworks. More information.
Street parking will be free on Canada Day.

Daytime closures:
June 28, 6 p.m. – July 1, 6 a.m.: Eastbound Riverfront Avenue from 1st Street SE to Macleod Trail
June 30, 6 a.m. – July 2, 3 a.m.: Samis Road

All day closures
July 1, 6 a.m. – July 2, 3 a.m. (all day road closure in effect):
Riverfront Avenue from 1st Street SW to the Langevin (Reconciliation) Bridge
2nd Avenue from 1st Street SW to Riverfront Avenue
1st Street SE from 3rd Avenue SW to Riverfront Avenue
Macleod Trail SE from 4th Avenue SE to Riverfront Avenue (with the exception of a community access lane)
3rd Street cul-de-sac South of Riverfront Avenue (with the exception of a community access lane)
Centre Street Bridge – lower decks

Evening closures
July 1, 6 p.m. – July 2, 3am (evening road closures in effect):
Memorial Drive from 10th Street NW to Edmonton Trail
Centre Street and sidewalks between 3 Avenue S and 8 Avenue N
Various streets in the Crescent Heights (and Rosedale) community will be restricted to residents only. There is no parking allowed in back alleyways. Ticketing and towing will be in effect.
Access will be maintained via 4 Street NW to 3 Street NW and the Park Plus parking lot on Memorial Drive NW west of Centre Street N
Community Resident Access Points are:
– Crescent Road at 3rd Street NW Crescent Road at 3rd Street NW
– 2nd Street at 8th Avenue NE
– 1st Street at 9th Avenue NW
– 6th Avenue at Edmonton Trail NE
Note: Various parking bans will be in place to support vehicle and pedestrian access.

In light of the road closures, no payment will be required for on-street parking on Canada Day, July 1, 2018 (time limits and all other signed restrictions still apply).
Calgary Parking Authority is offering free parking on Canada Day in all of their parkades, with the exception of the Arts Commons Parkade, where holiday rates will be in effect. Holiday rates will be in effect in select Calgary Parking Authority surface lots. Regular rates will be in effect at the Calgary Zoo, TELUS Spark and Heritage Park.

Fireworks parking North ridge – please consider alternate modes of transportation. Parking at SAIT is recommended as resident access only to Crescent heights and Rosedale communities – no parking in alleyways – ticketing and towing will be in effect.
